Prison System

Foucault claims that there is a reluctance to be rid of the prison system. Why do you think this is so, given its failures, as described by Foucault?

Foucault explains how the prison system is failing to release inmates who are not able to function in society.  When a person is locked up for a lengthy amount of time, there stands a chance of them being incarcerated again.  When they are released, they have to find a way to survive in society.  They have to find an employer that will trust them enough to hire them.  Most employers will not hire ex-convicts, so this makes employment harder for them to find.  This leads them into the life of crime again, which will land them back in prison.  This is a never-ending circle, especially for the ones with felony charges.  The criminals are not declining; they are multiplying making the prisons overcrowded.  The prison system needs to be reformed and find out what it’s going to take to release criminals who can function in our society.
