School Experience

Write a narrative from your school experience that encapsulates an important lesson you and perhaps others were able to learn. How did/has this experience shape(d) you?

I was taking College Algebra back in June; I was just about to finish my second week when I got really sick.  I tried to attend the chat session on Thursday, but was too sick to attend.   I thought I would complete it the next day.  The next day things got worse, so I was taken to the emergency room that evening.  After waiting for about three hours, in pain, I was taken back to the examination room.  After several test and scans the doctors concluded that my appendix had ruptured and I had to have surgery that night.  The doctor took out my appendix and the pain was gone.  I was in the hospital for another five days in all.  I was worried about school and getting my assignments turned in on time.  The instructor allowed me to turn in late assignments due to what I had been through, but I was ready to drop the course.  I was behind and felt that I could not get caught up.  In the end I got caught up with all my assignments and made a 78 on my final grade.  I learned that I can do anything I set my mind on doing.  This taught me a valuable lesson.  Do not ever give up on yourself no matter how bad things look.

Family Memories

Write a memory of a family event or scene that had an impact on your growth and development. Think about the importance of the event, and what you learned from it that stays with you today.

Family vacations always had an impact on me.  I enjoyed being with my family on any vacation or weekend trip.  These trips helped me to grow and develop into the person I am today.  The best times were when my family would go to the beach and stay for the weekend.  This would be our time with our Dad.  Dad worked a lot, but he found time to take us out on the weekend to the beach so we could play in the sand, fish, and swim.  The time we all spent together drew us closer as a family.  I have learned spending time with your family makes a family closer. Child Hood Memory

Write the memory of a childhood event that recounts a story related to your own identity as a boy or a girl and a moment of realizing gender differences. Think about the importance of the event, and what you learned from it that stays with you today.

Growing up I was taught that I could do anything.  I rode dirt bikes, go-carts, mini-bikes, and anything else with a motor.  I helped my dad out in his garage putting motors in vehicles, bleeding brake systems, and cleaning his tools.  As I grew up my dad decided that working on vehicles was for guys and would not allow me to continue helping in the shop.  He would say that I was a girl and I didn’t need to get so greasy and dirty.  I was upset with him over it, but was still allowed to go out and do little things to help out.  If I got my hands dirty than I had to clean them.  I enjoyed working with my dad, but had to stop as I got older because, I was a girl.  I still ride motorcycles and as for vehicles, I leave that to the boys.
