Write
the memory of a childhood event that recounts a story related to your own
identity as a boy or a girl and a moment of realizing gender differences. Think
about the importance of the event, and what you learned from it that stays with
you today.
Growing up
I was taught that I could do anything. I
rode dirt bikes, go-carts, mini-bikes, and anything else with a motor. I helped my dad out in his garage putting
motors in vehicles, bleeding brake systems, and cleaning his tools. As I grew up my dad decided that working on
vehicles was for guys and would not allow me to continue helping in the shop. He would say that I was a girl and I didn’t
need to get so greasy and dirty. I was
upset with him over it, but was still allowed to go out and do little things to
help out. If I got my hands dirty than I
had to clean them. I enjoyed working
with my dad, but had to stop as I got older because, I was a girl. I still ride motorcycles and as for vehicles,
I leave that to the boys.
